Hiccup Cures - How to Stop Hiccups

A couple of hiccups are fun, but, if they are really bad, you might need some emergency hiccup cures.

What causes hiccups

Hiccups are an involuntary act that occurs due to vagus nerve irritation from the digestive environment.

Irritated nerves cause a sudden contraction of the diaphragm muscle.

They occur more frequently after eating foods that irritate the stomach such as chili, pepper, alcohol, drugs or after a copious meal or eaten too much in a hurry.

Hiccups may also occur in diseases of the stomach and esophagus, but it is not a serious symptom unless it becomes chronic.

How to stop hiccups

All hiccup cures are based on 2 principles:
1. Stimulate the vagus nerve with another sensation. This makes the nerves send the brain signals that something more important came up and it's time for hiccups to be stopped.

2. Increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the blood so your body to become more concerned about its removal. Stopping hiccups is as simple as holding your breath so that the CO2 level will go up.

Is there a proven method for getting rid of them?

You will find there are many recommended means of treatment. Almost all of them address specifically phrenic and vagus nerves, then the nervous system.

A lot of the hiccup cures are empiric or semi-empiric, but they all try to circumvent the hiccup reflex, and to break the vicious circle.

None of the methods has a 100% efficacy, each succeeding in some cases, failing in others. Therefore, it is better to try them and to find which one works for you.

* A glass of water or a good scare are the best known hiccup cures.

A sip of water is probably the best known method for stopping hiccups. It is also the simplest and fastest home remedy for hiccups. What really happens is that drinking water settles down the irritated vagus nerve. Gargle can have the same effect.

Not all liquids work for hiccups. Don't drink alcohol or fizzy drinks because they will aggravate the irritation. Stick with the plain water instead.

* Simultaneously lift the arms up and breathe deeply. Hold your breath for a while, and then exhale slowly while you count to 20. Repeat the entire sequence twice more.

* Ice is also a good remedy against annoying hiccups.

It acts as a shock dose, and the natural reaction of the body will be to inhale deeply. The thermal shock response will trigger a complete inspiration, which will relax the diaphragm muscle, contracted during hiccups.

Drink an ice beverage or place a small ice cube in the cervical area. Crush ice and swallow a couple of small ice pieces. An ice bag placed on the chest is sometimes helpful.

* Simple sugar granules are ideal for stopping hiccups.

Although a scientific explanation of why this hiccup cure works hasn't been found, it is believed that sugar granules irritate the throat so hard causing an interruption of the nerve impulses causing hiccups. If hiccups recur, repeat the dose.

* On the same principle, you can try to stop hiccups with a piece of bread crust.

* Dip a piece of sugar in the vinegar, chew and swallow it.

* Honey can be a natural home remedy for hiccups through its disinfectant properties.

Just 1 teaspoon of honey can soothe stomach irritation rapidly. Try not to drink water for several minutes afterwards, for the natural disinfectant to work.

Herbal hiccup cures

* In case of rebel hiccups, a cup of ginger juice may be useful.

Mix 1 teaspoon of ginger juice, honey, lime juice and a little pepper. You can also chew small pieces of ginger.

* Catnip tea may be helpful.

* Lemon acts as a disinfectant. Every time you hiccup, peal a lemon and eat it fresh. Don't squeeze it as a juice. It is supposed to have an immediate effect.

* Chewing a few leaves of tarragon or peppermint will soothe the stomach.

Peppermint has antispasmodic effects and will relax the digestive tract. A simple hiccup remedy is a cup of peppermint tea after meals.

* Maria Treben, the famous Austrian herbalist, recommends dill seed tea.

"An unsweetened dill seed tea is a pleasant and prompt hiccups cure. Use 1 tablespoon dill seed to 1 cup of boiling water. Pour the boiling water over the seeds and let steep for 3 minutes." ~ Maria Treben

* Dill, caraway and anise for prolonged hiccups and chronic hiccups.

Make an infusion from 1 teaspoon of all three seeds to 1 cup of boiling water. Let steep for 3 minutes. Drink 1 cup per day, in small sips. Follow this treatment 12 days a month, for a couple of months.

* Here is a great tip for you baby's hiccup:

In case your baby has hiccups and you breastfeed him, just drink a cup of dill tea per day. Dill is also a galactogogue herb - it increases breast milk production, so you will kill two birds with one stone.

* Caraway

Chew 1 teaspoon of caraway seeds.Make an infusion from 1 teaspoon of caraway seeds to 1 cup boiling water. Let steep for 3 minutes.

Drink 1 cup per day, in small sips, 12 days a month, for a couple of months.

* Anise

Make an infusion from 1 teaspoon of anise seeds to 1 cup boiling water. Let steep for 3 minutes.

Drink 1 cup per day, in small sips, 12 days a month, for a couple of months.

* Cinnamon

Drink 1 cup of crushed cinnamon infusion. Put a pinch of cinnamon to 1 cup boiling water and let steep for 5 minutes.

* Infusion from Lemon balm and Speedwell.

Put 1 teaspoon of herb mixture to 1 cup boiling water. Let steep for 2 minutes. Drink 2 cups a day for 15 days a month, for a couple of months.

* Cloves induce a feeling of warmth in the stomach and can cure both nausea and hiccups. In addition, you can use them to stop bad breath (halitosis).

* Make a soup from 10 g cumin, 5 g cinnamon and 5 g dried ginger.

Boil them in 1 cup of water. Use this recipe to cure vomiting and rebel hiccups.
